With his condition now stabilized courtesy of the Insitute's cure, Mr. Hyde seems to have emerged as the dominant personality. He has however retained some of Tom's memories which come back to him in a flood. His memories also flashback to 1886 Edinburgh, where we see Dr. Jekyll meeting his fiend Robert Louis Stevenson who has written a fictional tale based on his experiences. Stevenson has also correctly guessed the nature of Jekyll's secret 'potion' which is revealed to the modern day Mr. Hyde. Claire is surprised when Hyde proposes something completely unexpected. The meeting is a revelation to Claire who learns that everyone knew of Tom's alter ego except her. The detective reveals her theory on the origins of the Institute and its true scientific purpose. In flashbacks, we learn how Tom Jackman and his wife Claire first met 7 years previously and of his early days at the Institute. Even then, there were subtle suggestions of Mr. Hyde's existence: a thumb print that isn't his, a sudden growth of hair on his arms or a violent, sudden rage when his wife is threatened. A black knight crashes Arthur's coming-of-age ceremony, throwing down the gauntlet to any knight who will fight him, killing all who do, one day at a time. Gaius discovers he is Uther's dead brother-in-law, now a wraith summoned from the grave by the witch Nimueh, seeking revenge for the death of his sister who died giving birth to Arthur. His intent: to eventually fight and kill Uther. Merlin learns that only a special sword burnished with a dragon's fiery breath can kill the knight. To that end, he asks Gwen for the best sword her father ever forged (the sword later known as Excalibur) and asks the imprisoned dragon to burnish it. The Dragon, however, tells Merlin that, once created, only Arthur should wield it, as evil will come of it otherwise. Merlin gives his word. Unfortunately, Uther has Arthur drugged and locked in his room, preparing to face the wraith himself. Gaius diagnoses a fatal poison whose only cure comes from a flower that grows only in certain caves. The perilous journey to it may take too long. Although Uther forbids him to 'risk a king' for a pawn, Arthur bravely rides. Nimueh plays the local damsel-in-distress-turned-guide to make sure Arthur is fully exposed to horrible monsters. Even from his deathbed, Merlin conjures magical aid. When Arthur brings back the flower, Uther jails his disobedient heir and refuses to have it brought to Gaius, which calls for courtier ingenuity to come through for the endangered ...
